The contribution of Greek women in the Greek-Italian War of 1940-1941

Greek women made an enormous contribution to the national struggle throughout the Greek-Italian War (1940-1941). They supported the Greek troops on the Albanian front, carrying ammunition under adverse weather conditions in inaccessible and remote places, in ravines, paths and cliffs. They also provided the soldiers with food, clothing and blankets. In particular, at the rear, women replaced the men who had been drafted and ceaselessly knitted woolen clothes for the needs of the army. Many young girls volunteered for the Greek Red Cross and served as nurses. The women of the towns and villages assumed the care and protection of the men from frostbite. The Greek nurses worked with heroism and dedication, many of them were killed during the bombing of hospitals and ships carrying the wounded. With these actions they caused worldwide admiration.
