The Old Railway Station of Katerini

The Old Railway Station of Katerini

The Railway Station of Katerini began operations in 1916, established by the military forces of the Entente as part of the needs of the Macedonian Front during World War I. Located at the site is also the Fort of the Katerini Railway Station, a living landmark of Pieria's history. The fort was constructed during the German occupation and, despite significant wear, still stands today. The OSE timber treatment factory was also built during the years of the German occupation. Its construction began in 1936, and the factory started operating in August 1939. In this factory, which has a chimney of approximately 38 meters, creosote was produced and used to coat the wooden railway sleepers employed by the Hellenic Railways. In the post-war years, the factory contributed to the development of Greece's infrastructure, not only in transportation but also in telecommunications and electricity.
