Title
Agios Meletios Ypseni
Description
The recently-built holy church of Saint Meletios is located in the southeast of the island, in the village of Lardos, and at a distance of about 60 kilometres from the center of the city of Rhodes. It is the new katholikon of the nunnery of the Virgin of Ypseni which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin and was built around 1855 by Saint Meletios, who came from Lardos. It is a single-nave, cruciform church with a narthex, a wooden iconostasis styled in marble imitation and 19th century icons. The new church was founded on June 13, 2012 and its inauguration took place on October 15, 2022. It celebrates on February 12, when the memory of its Founder, Saint Meletios is commemorated, whose holy head is kept in the Monastery. A short distance from the church we find the Mycenaean cemetery at the location "Aspropilia" in the region of Pylona village and further east, at about 15 km, the traditional village of Lindos. Also, to the west is the village of Laerma, with the Holy Monastery of Tharri.
