Title
Newly recruited soldiers report for duty in the Army at Amyntaio in 1959
Description
Newly recruited soldiers joined the Army in 1959 at the age of 21. During that time, my grandfather, Konstantinos Panagiotopoulos, was also enlisted. After undergoing training exercises and military parades, he and his fellow soldiers were assigned to a drill in Amyntaio, where they were called upon to protect the then-Chief Nikolaos Derdilis. Later, Derdilis became known as one of the key figures of the military regime, having participated in the coup of April 21, 1967. He was subsequently sentenced to imprisonment for his role in the suppression of the Athens Polytechnic uprising in November 1973
