The Aretsou Beach (Plaz), the Disinfecting Facilities, and the pier from which the refugees of 1922 disembarked
Περιγραφή
One of the nearby bathing spots of the time, simultaneously a place of historical memory, due to the disinfecting facilities. These can be seen in the background; they must have been the wooden shacks, remnants from the Allies. Refugees, who were exhausted from their travels, were placed in these to undergo disinfection to prevent the spread of diseases, such as typhus, that they might have carried. Their clothes and any belongings they had were also placed in the furnace for sterilization.
In the photograph, it is noticeable that there are no beach umbrellas in the modern sense. They began to appear systematically on the beaches after the 1970s, and perhaps a little later.
