Prophet Amos, Kalythies
Περιγραφή
The Monastery of Prophet Amos is located in the area of Kalythies, near Faliraki, just 14 kilometres from the center of the city of Rhodes. The monastic complex, located on the slopes of a verdant mountain, was built in 1838 on the ruins of an early Christian Basilica (5th-6th century) and preserves parts of the fresco decoration of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine years. According to tradition, the Monastery was built in the location where prophet Amos stopped the rock that Prophet Elias had thrown at him after a quarrel between them, and this rock is preserved on the back side of the Monastery. The celebration of the Monastery takes place with great ceremony on June 14. Very close to the monastery, at the top of the mountain, we also find the monastery of Prophet Elias, from where, according to tradition, he threw the rock to destroy the monastery of Prophet Amos, which is located at a lower level. Both Monasteries are very popular, mainly during the summer months, for the celebration of holy weddings and baptisms due to their outstanding location and the amazing view that stretches from the Monasteries to the sea and the surrounding area.
