Περιγραφή

The parish church of Saint Charalambos (20th century) in the village of Eleousa is located approximately 38 kilometres from the center of the city of Rhodes. It is located in one of the greenest areas of the island, which was called "Campochiaro" during the Italian occupation, and more specifically in the village square, a location used for housing by the Italian conquerors. The church is surrounded by imposing buildings of great architectural and historical value, such as the market, the sanatorium and the prison, which are all currently in different use. In fact, the church itself was initially Roman Catholic and was later converted into an Orthodox church. Also, at a distance of a few meters from the church, we find the church of Panagia Eleousa (Virgin Mary the merciful) and the round water fountain reservoir that houses the endemic fish species, Gizáni or Ghigi. On February 10, multitudes of believers flock from every part of the island for the celebration of Saint Charalambos. During the summer season, cultural events take place in the square located in front of the church.
